Show some love for NY OIL

At a recent hip-hop fundraiser in New York City, up and coming rap artist NY OIL announced that he would be supporting McKinney/Clemente ’08 even tho he had been asked to contribute a track to a mixtape for Barack Obama.

Think about that. In a year when popular hip-hop and rock artists like Common and REM are supporting Obama, that mixtape will be doing big numbers all around the country. NY OIL passed up his first shot at the big time to stand by Cynthia McKinney, Rosa Clemente and the Green Party. Although this was, to be honest, the first time I’ve heard of him, I am feeling a lot of gratitude towards NY OIL right now. He just made a statement loud and clear that he’s in the game to change the world, not just to get rich.

Now it’s on us to show NY OIL that we’ll stand by him in the same way he’s standing by Cynthia and Rosa. My money’s a little tight for buying CDs right now, but I plan to check him out and hype him to all the Greens and hip-hop fans I know. Here’s an idea: let’s make our own mixtape and blow to hell the idea that Greens just sit around holding hands and listening to Joan Baez all the time 😉
